Ballia (Uttar Pradesh), Sep 6 (IANS) The death of a college student, mowed down by a private bus in this Uttar Pradesh district Monday, sparked violence as several students indulged in brick-batting, damaged public vehicles and clashed with police.

Students of the Government Inter College (GIC) went berserk over the death of a class 11 student Abhishek Tiwari, who was crushed to death by a speeding private bus in the Sadar area. The driver of the bus managed to escape with the vehicle after the accident.

Demanding the arrest of the driver, angry students of the college targeted a number of public vehicles and pelted stones at police. Later, police had to baton-charge the students in order to disperse them.

Even as police claimed no one was seriously injured in the incident, several college students claimed they received injuries in the police action.

'To the best of my knowledge, no one was injured in the accident,' Deputy Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kumar told reporters in the town, some 350 km from Lucknow.

Teams have been constituted to nab the driver, police said.
