Lucknow, Sep 6 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Uttar Pradesh unit chief Surya Pratap Shahi Monday termed as 'fake' a letter containing names of allegedly corrupt party leaders, circulated during the state executive meet which ended Sunday.
'It has been found that the letter is fake. During the enquiry it has also been revealed that the names of persons on whose behalf the letter was issued are not associated with our party,' Shahi told reporters here at a press conference.
The letter circulated Saturday was addressed to party president Nitin Gadkari asking him to initiate action against the tainted leaders.
'Several BJP leaders are involved in misusing the party's funds on parties and other things... the leaders also impose their decision on the party's state president... action must be taken against such leaders involved in damaging the party's image,' the letter said.
Asked if the party would probe the allegations levelled against several party leaders and activists in the letter, Shahi said: 'As the letter is fake, we believe the allegations are also baseless.' He declined to elaborate.
Shahi also said that the party's national secretary Varun Gandhi would Friday visit Kanpur, where a Dalit teenager had immolated herself last week after police did not register her rape complaint against a youth of her village.
'He (Gandhi) is coming to take stock of the situation... The incident has once again exposed police inaction in the state,' he said.
