Bendu Appa Rao RMP – Sentiment overweighs Comedy

Starring: Allari Naresh, Kamna Jethmalani, Ahuthi Prasad, Meghana and others

Director: EVV Sathyanarayana

Music: Koti

Release date: 16 October 16, 2009

The film Bendu Appa Rao is a comedy film from the stable of EVV Sathyanarayana. Allari Naresh plays the title role in the film which is touted as a rib tickling comic entertainer. However the film has more sentiment than comedy.

Story:

Bendu Appa Rao (Naresh) is a RMP doctor in Bobbarlanka. He treats patients in his own inimitable style and he is assisted by his compounder Suman Shetty. Naresh makes a lot of money by conning his patients but all this is only to clear the dowry owed to his brother-in-law Krishna Bhagawan. Padma (Kamna Jethmalani) is the daughter of a rich landlord Ahuthi Prasad. She fails 10th class several times and gives up studies.

Padma meets Appa Rao and falls in love with him. Appa Rao too loves her but he is given a big responsibility by a young man who has met with a fatal accident. He asks Appa Rao to trace his parents and handover to them the 15 lakhs rupees he had earned in Dubai after running away from home.

Appa Rao along with his friends Srnivas Reddy and Achuth try to trace them but in vain. Appa Rao gives two lakhs each to both his friends to clear their debts and with the reaming amount, constructs a new school building in the village. He names the school after the dead young man Sivaji.

A new school teacher Meghana comes to the village along with her parents. She is none other than the sister of the dead man Sivaji. Appa Rao is guilt ridden and he cannot tell them the truth. He instead arranges money for the heart operation of Meghana’s father by mortgaging his own house and also agrees to marry Meghana.

The village president Chalapathi Rao learns about this and stops the marriage of Appa Rao with Meghana. The film finally ends on a happy note with all misunderstanding cleared and Apa Rao getting to marry his ladylove Padma.

Performance:

Allari Naresh once again gets a chance to play a role that he has been totally identified with all these days – a well meaning young comic hero. He does a good job and carries the film on his shoulders. Kamna Jethmalani is okay as the young daughter of a rich landlord. The other heroine Meghana is just average.

Ahuthi Prasad does a good job as a rich landlord who takes extremely good care of all his guests. Srinivas Reddy and Achut manage to raise some laughs. Ali appears in a guest role. Telangana Shakunthala, Jeeva, Chalapathi Rao and others are okay. Raghu Babu does a neat job as the servant of the Ahuthi household.

Music is okay and the production values adequate. The film is touted as a rib tickling comic entertainer but the film turns sentimental in the second half and the sentiment overshadows comedy.

Bednu Appa Rao is a film in the trademark EVV style but the comedy is not up to the expectations. The film ends up as a below average entertainer.
